250 GT Berlinetta "Tour de France"

A road racer wins

The long-wheelbase 250 GT Berlinetta earned its unofficial name by winning the Tour de France Automobile four years running. Seventy-seven cars span bodies and mechanical evolutions; chassis history matters more than a model label.

Overview

A production-based GT became Ferrari's road-racing tool.

Pinin Farina designed a light berlinetta body over Ferrari's 2'600 mm 250 GT chassis; Scaglietti built most examples in aluminium. De Portago's 1956 French win began four consecutive victories, followed by Olivier Gendebien from 1957 through 1959.

The body changed repeatedly across the run. Restoration accuracy therefore depends on build sheets and chassis-specific period photographs, not a single reference car.
