550 / 575 Maranello
The front V12 returns
The 550 restored Ferrari's two-seat, front-engined V12 after 23 years of mid-engined flat-twelves. The 575M kept the transaxle layout, enlarged the engine and made the F1 paddle gearbox optional; factory manuals now form their own market.

Overview
Ferrari returned its two-seat flagship engine to the front.
Ferrari launched the 550 Maranello to the press at the Nürburgring in 1996. It replaced the F512 M and used a rear transaxle to answer the assumption that Ferrari's fastest road GT needed a mid-engined layout.
The 575M arrived in 2002. The M meant modificata: capacity rose to 5.75 litres, adaptive damping and brakes changed, and Ferrari offered its electro-hydraulic F1 transmission beside the manual.
Limited open derivatives bookended the family: 448 550 Barchetta Pininfarina cars are commonly cited, followed by 559 575-based Superamericas. They are excluded from the berlinetta production count above.
