Its 5.7-litre V10 began in Porsche's abandoned LMP 2000 programme. A carbon monocoque, manual gearbox and ceramic clutch put that engine into a 1'380-kilogram open road car. All 1'270 were assembled by hand.

Overview

An unused Le Mans programme found a second brief.

Porsche showed the Carrera GT concept in Paris in September 2000. The car drew its V10 from the LMP 2000 prototype programme and turned the race package into a removable-roof road car.

The production car debuted in Geneva on 3 March 2003. Assembly began that autumn and ended in May 2006 after 1'270 cars, with body and final assembly work divided between Zuffenhausen and Leipzig.
