996 GT3 RS

The water-cooled RS begins

The 996 GT3 RS restarted Porsche's Rennsport line for the water-cooled era. Every car left the factory in Carrera White with red or blue graphics. Retained lightweight parts and accident history separate the market.

Overview

Rennsport returned after the GT3

The first 996 GT3 arrived in 1999. Porsche updated it in 2003 to 381 PS and 306 km/h, then used that base for a narrower homologation brief: the GT3 RS.

The RS stripped mass from glass, body panels and cabin trim, added adjustable suspension hardware and fixed its visual identity to white paint with red or blue details. It sat between a road GT3 and the competition-only RSR without pretending the two were the same car.

Published production totals were once inconsistent, but Porsche-market auction documentation now regularly identifies 682 examples. Individual histories remain more important than the headline count because many cars saw track use.
