930 Turbo

Boost arrives in one step

The first production 911 Turbo put race-developed forced induction into a leather-trimmed road car. Early 3.0-litre cars, later intercooled 3.3s, rare body styles and the one-year five-speed cars are distinct collector propositions.

Early three-litre originality and the final-year five-speed each create premiums for different reasons. Modified engines, federalisation and incomplete body provenance can erase them.

Overview

Turbocharging moved from the 917 and 911 race programmes to a series road car.

Porsche showed the production 911 Turbo at the Paris Motor Show in autumn 1974. Deliveries began in spring 1975 with a 3.0-litre engine, wide welded rear arches and a fixed spoiler.

For 1978, displacement rose to 3.3 litres and an intercooler lifted European output to 300 PS. Brakes derived from the 917 addressed the speed; the four-speed gearbox remained until the last model year.

Cabriolet, Targa and factory slant-nose cars broadened the late range. They trade separately from standard Coupés, just as original three-litre cars trade separately from later 3.3s.
