Overview

A 1971 show car, made buildable

The yellow LP500 concept appeared at Geneva on 11 March 1971. Marcello Gandini drew the body at Bertone; Paolo Stanzani was responsible for the mechanical package. The scissor doors and cab-forward wedge arrived together.

Three years of prototypes and road testing turned the show car into the LP400. Series production began in March 1974 at Sant'Agata with a 3.9-litre V12, tubular frame and hand-formed aluminium panels.

The LP400 S widened the body in 1978. The 5000 S enlarged the engine to 4.8 litres, the Quattrovalvole to 5.2 litres with four valves per cylinder, and the 25th Anniversary reworked the aerodynamic appendages. Production ended in 1990 after an official total of 1'999 cars.
