Type 35

Racing by multiplication

The Type 35 turned one Grand Prix design into a family of customer racing cars. Cast-aluminium wheels carried the brake drums and its straight-eight tolerated sustained high revs. Continuous identity matters.

Overview

A difficult debut, then six seasons of development

Five Type 35s started the French Grand Prix at Lyon in August 1924. Tyre failures blunted the result, but the basic package was already present: a 2.0-litre straight-eight, a low frontal area and a 750 kg chassis built around low unsprung mass.

Displacement rose to 2.3 litres for the 35T, then Bugatti added its own three-lobe supercharger. The 35TC became the 35B, while detailed revisions to cooling, suspension, wheels and combustion continued through 1930.

Bugatti states that roughly 340 Type 35s were built, while also noting that the exact number is no longer clear. Surviving cars therefore require component-level research rather than a production total treated as exact.
