Khamsin

The last Citroën-era V8

The Khamsin combines Marcello Gandini's glass-tailed Bertone body with a 4.9-litre quad-cam V8 and Citroën hydraulics. For collectors, specification and hydraulic health come before colour or mileage.

17 of 17 recorded sales · shown in USD · recorded currency in each record

Originality and a rare factory colour supported the 2016 result. A later five-speed car sold below its low estimate, showing that rarity alone does not set the price.

Price range · road · openConfidence · estimateTwo documented USD auction sales at $154'000 and $137'500 establish public observations, but both are from 2016 to 2018. The estimate also rests on the catalogue's existing valuation and allows for hydraulic condition, gearbox, market specification and restoration quality.

Overview

A Ghibli successor under Citroën

Bertone presented the Khamsin form at the 1972 Turin show, and production began in 1974. It was Maserati's first series-production design by Bertone, drawn by Marcello Gandini.

Giulio Alfieri retained the 4.9-litre quad-cam V8 and front-engine layout, but the chassis changed substantially. A unitary body, rear subframe and independent rear suspension replaced the older Ghibli formula.

Citroën high-pressure systems powered the steering, brakes, clutch, headlamp pods and driver's seat. Production continued through ownership changes and ended in 1982. Maserati's current archive gives 430 cars; Gooding's 2018 catalogue used 421, illustrating the surviving count dispute.
