5000 GT

The race V8 went formal

The 5000 GT put the 450S racing V8 into a reinforced chassis and sent 34 cars to eight coachbuilders. Body styles carry different market weight; chassis identity, coachbuilder and archive continuity come first.

7 of 7 recorded sales · shown in USD · recorded currency in each record

The three public results cluster between $885'000 and $1'017'500. That narrow result range conceals large differences in coachwork, condition and provenance.

Price range · road · openConfidence · mediumThree documented USD auction sales from 2017 to 2022 support the lower and middle part of the band. The sample is thin and mixes Touring, Allemano and one-off Michelotti coachwork; restoration state and body significance can move a car far beyond a model-wide range.

Overview

A private request became a 34-car programme

The 5000 GT began with the Shah of Persia's request for a faster 3500 GT. Alfieri did not make a simple engine swap: the AM103 chassis, braking and driveline were revised around the nearly five-litre four-cam V8.

Touring completed the first body and Maserati showed the car at Turin in 1959. Three cars used that Shah specification. For the series that followed, Maserati softened the racing engine with revised dimensions, chain-driven camshafts and Lucas mechanical injection.

The client list included Gianni Agnelli, Briggs Cunningham, the Aga Khan, Ferdinando Innocenti and Stewart Granger. Production stopped at 34, with 22 Allemano coupés and a small group of bodies that need to be valued individually.
