The fixture
A concours on a frozen lake, at altitude: The ICE stages collector cars on the winter surface of Lake St. Moritz, in front of the Engadin’s mountain wall. It is the season’s most photogenic fixture and its most improbable one — priceless machinery on studded tyres, drifting across black ice.
The ICE trades the lawn’s formality for movement. Cars are driven here, not parked, and the judging rewards presence over polish.
Cars that run at The ICE carry usage provenance — documented outings, not museum stillness.

The origin
2019
In 2019, THE I.C.E. St. Moritz began with a pilot on frozen Lake St. Moritz. Its published origin story reaches back to January 1985, when Cresta Run members led by Keith Schellenberg drove Vintage Bentley tourers on the lake for the Run’s centenary. Marco Makaus, who watched, developed the winter-concours idea. The St. Moritz municipality and Badrutt’s Palace backed it; Lisippa SAGL organised the 2 March 2019 pilot with Pirelli. After two years of waiting due to Covid, the first official edition followed in February 2022.
How it runs
- Two lake days
- Recent editions use Friday for a public close-view display, modern-car sessions and Best in Class judging. Saturday is reserved for free laps on the snow-covered lake track before the awards. Cars are carefully selected; public access is limited, rather than invitation-only.
- Current class set
- Class headings change by edition. The 2026 programme named five: Barchettas on the Lake, Icons on Wheels, Open Wheels, Birth of the Hypercar and Legendary Liveries. Best Sound was also introduced for 2026, judged while engines were started.
- Awards
- Best in Show is announced after Saturday’s lake programme and receives the trophy Lord Norman Foster designed for The I.C.E. The Spirit of St. Moritz trophy is signed by Rolf Sachs; Hero Below Zero is chosen by the public.
- Weather gate
- The lake programme depends on safety assessments by See-Infra AG and local authorities. Extraordinary snowfall cancelled the 2024 lake event and temporarily isolated the Engadin. Cars at Serletta Parking were nevertheless judged indoors.
On the record
- 2019
The 2 March “edition 0” pilot drew more than 50 cars. A 1989 Lamborghini Countach 25° won InstaLake and a 1929 Bentley 4.5 Litre took Spirit of St. Moritz; Giugiaro Design premiered the Kangaroo Hyper-SUV.
- 2022
After a two-year Covid wait, 45 cars contested five classes on 45-centimetre ice. The 1933 Alfa Romeo Tipo B/P3 won Best in Show; the 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO, chassis 4219 GT, won InstaLake.
- 2023
The 2023 edition adopted two days. Philip Sarofim’s 1970 Lancia Stratos HF Zero won Concept Cars & One Offs and Best in Show; the official report recorded 48 cars and more than 11,000 participants.
- 2024
Heavy snow and safety restrictions cancelled the lake event and isolated the Engadin. At Serletta Parking, the jury awarded the 1938 Delage D8-120S, bodied by de Villars, Icons on Wheels and Best in Show; it later left through the storm with its roof open.
- 2025
Fifty-two cars returned to the lake across 21–22 February, drawing more than 20,000 visitors. Marc Newson’s 1934 Bugatti Type 59 won Open Wheels and Best in Show; Horacio Pagani’s 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 took Icons on Wheels.
