Daytona Coupe

Six cars. One title.

Shelby closed the Cobra and cut off its tail for Europe's long straights. Six works coupes carried an American manufacturer to the 1965 FIA GT title. Each chassis is a distinct competition artifact; public sales are rare.

Price range · road · openConfidence · estimateOnly one original Daytona Coupe has a documented public auction sale in the sources below: CSX2601 at $7.25 million in 2009. The present band is an editorial estimate anchored by that result and Gooding Christie's 2026 estimate in excess of $25 million for CSX2300; chassis history, race record and retained original material can move an individual car substantially.

Overview

The Cobra needed less drag, not more engine.

Shelby American commissioned the prototype in late 1963 around the Cobra roadster's chassis and 289 V8. Peter Brock set the aerodynamic shape; Ken Miles directed and tested the racing programme; Phil Remington and John Ohlsen translated it into aluminium. CSX2287 was complete by January 1964.

The prototype led its class at Daytona before a pit fire ended the race, then won GT at Sebring. CSX2299 won the GT class at Le Mans in 1964 and finished fourth overall. Five further coupes joined CSX2287, most assembled with Italian bodywork close to Ferrari's home ground.

Shelby's team fell narrowly short of Ferrari in 1964. In 1965 the result reversed: the Cobras secured the FIA International Manufacturers' GT Championship, the first such FIA international series title for an American automobile manufacturer. By 1966, the works had moved on and the six cars began separate lives.
