Phantom II

The chassis went lower

The Phantom II put the 7.7-litre six into a lower chassis, with engine and gearbox mounted as one unit. The Continental short chassis is the collector focus, but coachwork and mechanical integrity outrank the badge.

Continental identity attracts attention, but body provenance determines whether the premium holds.

Price range · road · openConfidence · lowThe band is an editorial range for complete, well-documented cars with period coachwork. The small public sample is dominated by one-off bodies, and even Continental results cannot be transferred without checking original specification, coachbuilder, body continuity and restoration quality.

Overview

Royce redesigned the chassis, then made it smaller

Rolls-Royce announced Phantom II in 1929 after four years of refining the original New Phantom. The engine remained a 7.7-litre overhead-valve six, but the chassis, drivetrain and rear suspension were reorganised around lower bodywork and reduced maintenance.

Henry Royce still considered the short Phantom II too large for his own use in southern France. He asked Ivan Evernden and the development team for a closer-coupled experimental car, 26EX. Its reception on a continental sales tour created the production Continental.

The Phantom II was built only at Derby, while Springfield continued the Phantom I. Production references disagree: specialist counts commonly give 1'681 chassis, while the National Motor Museum and some auction catalogues state 1'767. The dossier uses 1'681 and records the dispute rather than merging the figures.
