Overview

A motor-show concept became a joint production programme

Mercedes-Benz showed the Vision SLR at Detroit in January 1999 while its Formula 1 alliance with McLaren was winning championships. The concept's front-mid-engine proportions, long bonnet and side exhausts survived into the production car, unveiled at Frankfurt in September 2003.

AMG supplied the 5.4-litre supercharged V8; McLaren engineered and assembled the carbon car at Woking. Customer deliveries began in 2004. The product brief retained luggage space, automatic transmission and cabin comfort alongside 334 km/h performance, which kept the SLR apart from the Porsche Carrera GT and Ferrari Enzo.

The 722 Edition arrived in 2006, the Roadster in 2007 and the 722 S Roadster later. The 75-car Stirling Moss speedster closed the factory series. Mercedes-Benz reports 2'157 SLRs across seven years; individual body styles and derivatives now need separate market treatment.
