507

Hand-built and almost unsellable

The 507 established BMW's post-war collector ceiling: an aluminium body, alloy V8 and almost no supply. For a buyer, body identity, the matching engine, factory hardtop fit and an unbroken file matter more than polish.

A restored Series II made $2.75M in 2017. More recent documented sales run from $1.5125M to $2.1225M, showing a selective market rather than one fixed price.

Cars trade infrequently, and originality, engine identity, Series I specification, hardtop fit and named provenance can move a result beyond it.

Overview

The export gamble

BMW began with Ernst Loof's Typ 528 project in 1954. US importer Max Hoffman rejected that prototype and connected BMW with New York designer Albrecht Graf von Goertz; 20 weeks separated Goertz's first sketches from approval of the body in March 1955.

The 507 appeared at the Frankfurt motor show in September 1955. Under the aluminium skin sat a frame shortened from the 502 and a 3.2-litre version of BMW's alloy V8, with 150 PS and a four-speed manual gearbox.

Hoffman's promised volume receded while the cost of individual production rose. BMW stopped in 1959 after 252 cars by the count used in the assignment and most auction catalogues; BMW Group Classic's current model-series archive gives 251.
