DBS V8 / V8 Vantage

The V8, turned up

The DBS V8 established Tadek Marek's eight-cylinder platform; the 1977 V8 Vantage became Aston Martin's performance flagship. Bolt-on fliptails, Oscar India cars, X-Packs and Volantes share a silhouette but not a price level.

Overview

A twenty-year body line reached its fastest form in 1977.

The William Towns DBS arrived with a straight-six in 1967 and gained Tadek Marek's 5.3-litre V8 in 1969. Renamed AM V8 after the David Brown era, it remained Aston Martin's core hand-built grand tourer.

The V8 Vantage was announced on 18 February 1977. Revised breathing, higher output and new spoilers produced a four-seat car Aston Martin claimed would reach about 170 mph and 60 mph in 5.2 seconds.

Production evolved through bolt-on fliptail, integrated-spoiler Oscar India and late 580-series forms. The factory Vantage Volante arrived for the final years; the 580 X-Pack became the most sought-after regular engine specification.
