DB5

The Bond-era grand tourer

The DB5 put a four-litre straight-six, five-speed ZF gearbox and Touring's aluminium body into a four-seat GT. Matching numbers, original specification and factory body style set the hierarchy. Production totals vary by source.

Overview

An engine revision followed by a camera

The DB5 made its public debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 1963. It retained the late DB4's Touring form but brought a 3'995 cc engine, Girling brakes, electric windows and a full-synchromesh ZF five-speed gearbox.

EON Productions placed a gadget-equipped Silver Birch DB5 in Goldfinger in 1964. The films turned one specification into shorthand for the model, while saloons, convertibles, Vantage cars and Radford shooting brakes remained mechanically and commercially distinct.

Aston Martin's 60th-anniversary retrospective lists 887 saloons, 123 convertibles and 12 coach-built shooting brakes, totalling 1'022. Other Aston Martin and auction sources quote saloon counts from 886 to 898; any claim of rarity should identify the body style and source.
