Bugatti Head of Technical Development, 2017–21, who supervised the Divo’s development
The record
German engineer who supervised the Divo’s development as Bugatti Head of Technical Development from 2017 to 2021.
Born in Braunschweig, Ellrott studied mechanical engineering at the technical university in his home city. He joined Volkswagen AG’s Overall Vehicle Development department in 1996, working in vehicle planning and support. In 2003 he became Head of Development, Special Models at Volkswagen Individual / Volkswagen R. Four years later he led development company-wide, served as deputy managing director through 2011, and added Volkswagen Zubehör development responsibilities from 2010.
Ellrott returned to Volkswagen AG’s Overall Vehicle Development in 2011. From 2013 he headed Geometry and Function; Bugatti said his most recent Volkswagen assignment had been prototype management within Technical Development. He joined Bugatti in October 2016 and became Head of Development and a member of the Board of Management on 1 January 2017, succeeding Willi Netuschil. In that role he reported to Bugatti president Wolfgang Dürheimer.
Bugatti presented the Divo at The Quail on 24 August 2018, where Ellrott, then Head of Technical Development, compared its agility and high-performance cornering step to the Veyron-to-Chiron development. Bugatti’s 2021 departure announcement said the Divo, Centodieci, Chiron Pur Sport, Chiron Super Sport 300+ and Bolide concept had been developed under his direction. From February 2021, it said, he would take CTO responsibility for Compact Vehicles at Volkswagen Passenger Cars.
At the Divo premiere, Ellrott said modern coachbuilding gave Bugatti’s engineers new freedom and compared the car’s gain in agility and high-performance cornering with the overall development from the Veyron to the Chiron.
In Bugatti’s January 2021 departure announcement, Ellrott described the Divo as a reinterpretation of modern coachbuilding, the Chiron Super Sport 300+ as the first series manufacturer to exceed 300 mph, and the Chiron Pur Sport as a car given maximum lateral dynamics.
