Rolls-Royce chief styling engineer credited in the register for the Bentley R-Type Continental and the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud and Silver Shadow.

John Blatchley joined Rolls-Royce in 1940 from London coachbuilder Gurney Nutting. He later became Chief Styling Engineer and developed the full-width body of the Silver Cloud, which entered production in 1955.

Blatchley created the broad concept and detailed design of the Silver Shadow. The R-Type Continental is attributed jointly to Blatchley and Ivan Evernden.

Factory bodywork

His work moved from bespoke coachbuilding at Gurney Nutting to body designs intended for factory production, including the Silver Cloud and Silver Shadow.
