The record
Italian test driver who became Head of Lamborghini Motorsport, the role he held when Squadra Corse launched the track-only Essenza SCV12, and who is Head of Motorsport at McLaren Automotive.
He was born in Rome in 1975. He started racing at twelve and joined Lamborghini's Research and Development department as a test driver in 2001. In February 2002 he drove a Murciélago at Nardò to the one-hour international production-car record; Lamborghini also records him as one of the drivers who took the Volkswagen W12 prototype to the FIA 24-hour speed record on the same circuit that year.
Lamborghini made him chief R&D test driver in 2009, when it returned to racing. Its 2015 appointment notice credits him with contributing to production models and special versions from the Murciélago to the Huracán, and to the racing cars that followed. He raced for Audi Italia from 2006 to 2009, then as a Lamborghini official test driver, and was Italian GT Cup champion in 2011.
From 2015 he ran Super Trofeo, the Huracán GT3 programme and the Esperienza and Accademia courses. He left Lamborghini with immediate effect on 14 March 2024. McLaren Automotive appointed him Head of Motorsport on 7 November 2025 to oversee its GT3, GT4 and Trophy activities; a McLaren Trophy America release still identified him by that title on 30 July 2026.
While he was Head of Lamborghini Motorsport, Squadra Corse developed the track-only Essenza SCV12. At its 29 July 2020 launch, Lamborghini quoted Sanna on the customer club: hangar storage at Sant'Agata Bolognese, arrive-and-drive events from 2021, and factory support. The launch assigns the car's development to Squadra Corse and its design to Centro Stile.
As Head of Motorsport from 2015, he took the helm of Super Trofeo, the GT3 programmes and the customer driving courses. In 2017 he told PistonHeads that spare-parts service, technical support and hospitality were areas in which the department continued to invest.
On the Essenza SCV12, he spoke for the off-track programme: a dedicated hangar at Sant'Agata Bolognese, arrive-and-drive events on FIA Grade 1 circuits, and factory support. Squadra Corse developed the car; Centro Stile designed it.
He joined Lamborghini's R&D department as a test driver in 2001 and was appointed Head of Motorsport in January 2015. The factory notice credits him with developing production models and special versions from the Murciélago to the Huracán and, since the 2009 return to racing, with the racing cars produced by the company.
