The fixture
Every other year the Grimaldi Forum becomes a sale room, and the harbour outside does the advertising. RM Sotheby’s Monaco anchors the principality’s historic-racing fortnight, selling competition cars a few hundred metres from the circuit that made many of them famous.
Monaco lots skew toward single-seaters, sports prototypes and cars with period Monaco history — provenance the venue itself authenticates.
Cars sold within sight of the track they raced — venue and provenance in one lot essay.

The origin
2010
RM Auctions inaugurated Sporting Classics of Monaco at the Grimaldi Forum on 1 May 2010. The one-day auction recorded €33,235,917 in total sales; Max Girardo was then managing director of RM Europe. The sale is held alongside, not as part of, the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique. In February 2015, Sotheby's acquired a 25 percent stake in RM Auctions; contemporary reporting described the business as RM Sotheby's. The event is now styled The Monaco Auction by RM Sotheby's.
How it runs
- Biennial Historique pairing
- RM Sotheby's schedules this sale biennially alongside the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique. The 2024 listing called it the seventh Monaco auction, held 10–11 May; the Grimaldi Forum listed 24–25 April 2026 as the eighth. The auction is a separate fixture from the race meeting.
- Preview and access
- At the 2026 Grimaldi Forum edition, preview admission was public. The cocktail and auction were limited to registered bidders, catalogue holders and consignors; a catalogue admitted two people, while auction-room seating was reserved for registered bidders. Proof of funds was required to complete bidding approval.
- Bidding and terms
- Lots not marked no reserve are subject to a reserve set by the consignor. RMS provides absentee, telephone and online bidding; its Monte Carlo terms set motor-car buyer's premium at 15 percent on the first €200,000 of hammer price and 12.5 percent above, plus VAT on the premium.
- Separate Monaco sales
- RM's 2025 Crown Jewel was a standalone Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix-weekend auction, not an edition of this Historique-weekend sale. Bonhams's 2026 Monaco Sale was separately catalogued for the Fairmont Monte Carlo on 24 April; prices from either event belong to neither fixture.

At the 1 May debut, the 1962 Ferrari 400 Superamerica Cabriolet Pininfarina SWB, chassis 3309 SA, sold for a reported €2,800,000, a Superamerica record; the 1960 Maserati Tipo 61 Birdcage, chassis 2470, made €2,464,000.
- 2012
At the 11–12 May Grimaldi Forum sale, the 1957 Ferrari 625 TRC Spider by Scaglietti, chassis 0680 MDTR, one of two built, sold for €5,040,000. Michael Schumacher's Ferrari F1-2000, chassis 204, sold for €806,400.
- 2014
At Le Sporting Monte-Carlo, the 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB/C by Scaglietti, chassis 09067, ninth of twelve, sold for €5,712,000. RM reported €41,355,430 in total sales, then its highest-grossing European result.
- 2022
The single-day 14 May Grimaldi Forum sale totalled €30,918,292. Nigel Mansell's 1991 Williams FW14 sold for €4,055,000, while his 1989 Ferrari 640 sold for €3,605,000.
- 2024
At the 10–11 May sale, Jody Scheckter's 1979 Ferrari 312 T4, winner of his Belgian, Monaco and Italian Grands Prix, sold for €7,655,000. RM reported more than €40 million in sales and an 82 percent sell-through rate.
