The origin

2004

The Gooding Pebble Beach auction began in 2004. Gooding & Company itself had been founded in Santa Monica in 2003 by David Gooding and Dawn Ahrens. Gooding had led Christie’s International Motor Car division and then worked briefly at RM Auctions. AutoWeek reported that Christie’s moved its Monterey sale to the Jet Center in 2004 and that Gooding’s inaugural sale grossed more than $12 million. Christie’s completed its acquisition in 2024; the auction house now trades as Gooding Christie’s.

How it runs

Official concours sale: Gooding Christie’s is the official auction house of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance and the only auction inside the gates of 17-Mile Drive. The 2026 edition was held at Parc du Concours, at the corner of Stevenson Drive and Portola Road.
Two live sessions: The 2026 edition had two live sessions: Friday, 14 August at 4:00 p.m. PDT and Saturday, 15 August at 11:00 a.m. PDT. Viewing ran from Wednesday through Saturday. Gooding issued separate Friday and Saturday catalogues, while its online catalogue is the current authoritative source for lot information.
How bidding works: Registration requires a bank letter of guarantee or other proof of ability to pay. Bids may be made in person, by telephone, absentee instruction or online, subject to availability. Gooding Christie’s acts as the seller’s agent; lots sell as-is. US live vehicle lots carry 12% on the first $250,000 and 10% on the balance.
Separate admission: A Concours Sunday ticket does not admit its holder to the auction. Viewing and bidding require direct registration with Gooding Christie’s and fees. The 2026 sale had a live broadcast. For a live auction, full payment is due by 5:00 p.m. local time on the Wednesday after the auction concludes.

2004
Gooding & Company staged its first Pebble Beach auction, grossing more than $12 million. In the same year, Christie’s moved its Monterey sale from Pebble Beach to the Jet Center.
2011
The first Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, the 1957 0666 TR with Scaglietti coachwork, sold for $16,390,000. Rick Carey reported a $14.9 million hammer after bidding between a telephone bidder and an anonymous bidder outside the tent.
2018
The ex-Gary Cooper 1935 Duesenberg SSJ, chassis 2594, one of two built, sold for $22,000,000. Gooding listed Briggs Cunningham and Miles Collier as its two owners since 1949.
2021
A 1995 McLaren F1, chassis 029, sold for $20,465,000. Gooding described the Creighton Brown road car as one of 64 built, delivered new to Japan and showing fewer than 390 kilometres.
2025
The 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider Competizione, chassis 2383 GT, sold for $25,305,000 at Gooding Christie’s first official Pebble Beach sale. Gooding said the result set its auction record at the time.
