Heritage · Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Straßenversion
“It runs ... and looks good.”
December 1996 to April 1997
One hundred and twenty-eight days
AMG technical director Gerhard Ungar received the brief with the first FIA GT round already fixed for April. A McLaren F1 GTR became a test mule while the team drew, modelled and built its own carbon car.
The first CLK GTR tested in Spain, then qualified on pole at Hockenheim. Its rushed calendar did not become the owner's problem: the customer cars arrived only after a full championship season had exposed the racing hardware.
The hands
The people behind the car
The people whose work shaped the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Straßenversion.
Gerhard Ungar
Technical director and project lead
Led the design and development team charged with delivering the CLK GTR before the first 1997 FIA GT round.
Bernd Schneider
Development and works driver
Tested the first CLK GTR and drove it to the 1997 FIA GT drivers' championship.
Hans-Werner Aufrecht
AMG co-founder and programme principal
Oversaw AMG's competition operation and later founded HWA, which built the customer Straßenversion cars.
1998 to 1999
The delayed production run
HWA and AMG's Special Vehicle Construction Office built 20 customer coupés. Air conditioning, ABS, insulation, leather and luggage storage altered the use case, not the underlying structure.
A small roadster series followed. Its separate intakes, mirrors, roll hoops and wings make it a distinct derivative, and its later completion dates explain why published totals do not agree.

24 to 25 August 2018
