33 Stradale

The racer wears aluminium

Alfa Romeo stretched the Tipo 33 race chassis, fitted a steel centre structure and kept the two-litre V8 behind the cabin. Franco Scaglione gave it a 99-centimetre-high aluminium body. Of 18 chassis, 11 or 12 were completed.

Alfa Romeo said in 2017 that an example was worth well over EUR 10m, but no documented public auction sale of an original 33 Stradale was found; chassis identity, body history and originality can overwhelm a broad estimate.

Alfa Romeo says the model is extremely seldom offered. The empty ledger records the absence of verifiable public sales, not an absence of private transactions.

    Overview

A road car inside the Tipo 33 programme

Alfa Romeo president Giuseppe Luraghi wanted the marque back in international sports-car racing. The company brought Autodelta and Carlo Chiti into the programme, and the first Tipo 33 won its debut hill climb at Fleron in March 1967.

The road brief asked for a private-customer GT with almost the performance of the racer. Scaglione lengthened the wheelbase for two occupants, Aeronautica Sicula produced the steel chassis and Marazzi formed the aluminium body. The racing V8 was retuned to 230 PS at 8'800 rpm.

Alfa showed the finished car at Monza in September 1967 and launched it at the Turin Motor Show. At 9'750'000 lire it cost more than most contemporary sports cars. Hand construction and differing regulations produced single- and twin-headlamp cars, and later bodies gained additional cooling apertures.
