RCA vehicle-design tutor and contributor to the Bentley Continental R exterior
The record
British designer who worked with John Heffernan on a shared clay for the Bentley Continental R; Heffernan said Greenley developed the bodyside and part of the front.
Greenley first set foot in Vauxhall’s Luton Engineering and Styling Centre in 1965, according to Classic & Sports Car. A Design Week column originally published in March 1990 referred to Greenley and John Heffernan as Royal College of Art tutors working for Aston Martin.
Octane identifies Greenley as head of the RCA department when the informal Greenley-Heffernan partnership won the Panther Solo contract. The work was followed by Rolls-Royce work on Bentley Project 90, then a Corniche proposal and the Continental R. In Aston Martin’s design competition, Heffernan said Victor Gauntlett found Greenley’s fastback proposal too much like a Corvette; Heffernan’s proposal proceeded to a full-size model.
The Continental R was developed outside Crewe, Heffernan recalled, in a side building at Park Ward’s 1930s fire station in London. The pair took turns on a shared clay while also working on the Aston Martin and Panther Solo 2. Heffernan said Greenley developed the bodyside and part of the front, including the change to twin lamps; Heffernan retained roof and rear development. The production car debuted at the 1991 Geneva Motor Show.
On the Continental R they shared a clay. Heffernan said each side kept the same theme but differed in section; Greenley and his modeller added muscle above the feature line. Greenley then continued development of the bodyside and part of the front.
Heffernan said the Bentley work was kept outside Crewe, in a Park Ward side building at a 1930s London fire station converted into a studio. The team alternated weekly between the Bentley, the Aston Martin and Panther Solo 2 work.
