The record

First head of BMW Motorsport GmbH, credited in the register for the BMW 3.0 CSL and M1 programmes.

BMW Motorsport GmbH was established on 1 May 1972 with Neerpasch as head of its initial 35-person specialist team. He had previously been a Porsche works driver and Ford's head of motorsport.

The register credits him with leading the BMW 3.0 CSL and M1 programmes. BMW records that the fuel-injected second stage of the 3.0 CSL was developed under Neerpasch, while the M1 programme led to the Procar series when homologation timing changed.

Motorsport as an ideas workshop

BMW describes Neerpasch as treating BMW Motorsport not simply as a racing department, but as an ideas workshop for the company.
