Akira Iida was born on 18 December 1969 and is from Sagamihara in Kanagawa Prefecture. Toyota GAZOO Racing records a four-wheel debut at nineteen in the Fuji Speedway Freshman Race in 1989. He reached the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1994 in a Honda NSX entered by Kremer Honda Racing. In 1995, sharing a Honda NSX with Keiichi Tsuchiya and Kunimitsu Takahashi for Team Kunimitsu, he finished eighth overall and first in GT2.

He returned to single-seaters in Formula Nippon from 1997 to 1999, after a 1994 All Japan Formula 3000 cameo. In 2002 he moved to Toyota and, paired with Juichi Wakisaka, won the All Japan Grand Touring Car Championship GT500 title after a first win in the third round. Lexus later listed that championship among his credentials when it entered the LFA at the Nürburgring.

From 2008 he raced the Lexus LFA for GAZOO Racing in the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. Toyota records class wins in SP8 in 2010 and 2012, and in SP-PRO with the LFA Code X in 2014. On 31 August 2011, named by Toyota as LFA test driver, he lapped the Nordschleife in 7:14.64 in a Nürburgring Package car on standard Bridgestone Potenza RE070 tyres.

In their words

The momentum of our team is very good. Our target for the 24 Hours Nürburgring race is to maintain a steady pace, in line with the way we have chosen to set up the vehicles.
