## A small team outside Toyota's normal line

Toyota formed the 280A project after the 1964 Japanese Grand Prix. Jiro Kono led it; Satoru Nozaki handled design and Shinichi Yamazaki the chassis. Toyota set the layout, design and basic parameters; Yamaha raised the Crown-derived engine's performance, completed detailed body and chassis engineering, built the prototypes and assembled the production cars.

The first prototype was complete in August 1965 and a second appeared at the Tokyo Motor Show that October. Before sales began in May 1967, development cars finished third at the 1966 Japanese Grand Prix, took first and second at the Suzuka 1'000 km and set the Yatabe endurance records.

The 1969 update changed the driving lamps and added comfort options. Production ended at Iwata in October 1970, three years after launch.

| Built one at a time | Yamaha assembled each 2000GT by hand at Iwata and road-tested it before release. Toyota's museum records fewer than ten cars in some months and 14 at the busiest. The mixed-material panels, curved glass, hand-sprayed paint and strict Toyota inspection made panel gaps, water sealing and finish part of the production work. The original pace was about one completed car every three days. |
| Three days at Yatabe | In October 1966 a 2000GT ran at Yatabe in worsening weather as a typhoon approached and left with three world records and 13 international records. The world-record categories were 10'000 miles, 15'000 kilometres and 72 hours. The trial put durability evidence behind a car that had not yet reached customers. |
| Two roofs cut away | Toyota converted two prototypes into open cars for You Only Live Twice. They were film tools, not a production body style. The film crew wanted the actors visible, so Toyota rejected its own targa proposal, lowered the open cars and fitted a removable acrylic windscreen. The conversion took two weeks. |
