# Daytona Coupe

Six cars. One title.

Shelby closed the Cobra and cut off its tail for Europe's long straights. Six works coupes carried an American manufacturer to the 1965 FIA GT title. Each chassis is a distinct competition artifact; public sales are rare.

1964 to 1965 · 6 built · Los Angeles and Modena

## The price and the proof

Indicative road-car band $20M–$30M · 3 documented road sales · 3 recorded sales on file. Modeled values are not observed sales. Nothing here is investment advice.

Confidence: estimate. Only one original Daytona Coupe has a documented public auction sale in the sources below: CSX2601 at $7.25 million in 2009. The present band is an editorial estimate anchored by that result and Gooding Christie's 2026 estimate in excess of $25 million for CSX2300; chassis history, race record and retained original material can move an individual car substantially.

Indicative USD range for one of the six original works coupes, not for continuation or replica Daytonas.

The public record is one sale separated from the current market by seventeen years. Continuation cars and replicas are excluded.

## The Cobra needed less drag, not more engine.

Shelby American commissioned the prototype in late 1963 around the Cobra roadster's chassis and 289 V8. Peter Brock set the aerodynamic shape; Ken Miles directed and tested the racing programme; Phil Remington and John Ohlsen translated it into aluminium. CSX2287 was complete by January 1964.

The prototype led its class at Daytona before a pit fire ended the race, then won GT at Sebring. CSX2299 won the GT class at Le Mans in 1964 and finished fourth overall. Five further coupes joined CSX2287, most assembled with Italian bodywork close to Ferrari's home ground.

Shelby's team fell narrowly short of Ferrari in 1964. In 1965 the result reversed: the Cobras secured the FIA International Manufacturers' GT Championship, the first such FIA international series title for an American automobile manufacturer. By 1966, the works had moved on and the six cars began separate lives.

| Highlight | Detail |
| --- | --- |
| Built for the long straight | The open Cobra ran out of speed against Ferrari's 250 GTO. Peter Brock drew a low roof and a chopped Kamm tail; with suitable gearing, the coupe exceeded 185 mph and used 20 to 30 percent less fuel than the roadster. There was no wind tunnel and no finished drawing set. Phil Remington's crew turned Brock's shape into CSX2287 in roughly three months, then tested it with Ken Miles at Riverside. The first coupe was three and a half seconds a lap quicker than the roadster there. |
| Six related, not identical | CSX2287 was formed in Los Angeles. The other five chassis went to Carrozzeria Gransport in Modena, where differences in roofline, glazing and detail made each car identifiable before race numbers were applied. CSX2299's cowl tube and windscreen were mounted higher than intended, leaving it with a taller roof. Dan Gurney chose it at Le Mans because he fitted; with Bob Bondurant, he took fourth overall and the GT class in 1964. |
| A title, then obsolescence | The Coupes helped Shelby finish second to Ferrari in 1964 and win the FIA International Manufacturers' GT Championship in 1965. Regulation changes and the Ford GT40 programme ended their frontline career almost immediately. Their short works life concentrates value in chassis-level evidence: race results, original fabric, period repairs and the identity of the mechanics and drivers who handled each car. |
