## The single-model Rolls-Royce

By 1906, Rolls-Royce was building several low-volume models whose parts changed constantly. Claude Johnson proposed concentrating the company on one expensive car; Henry Royce answered with the 40/50 H.P. and its smooth six-cylinder engine.

The twelfth chassis, 60551, carried silver paint and fittings and the individual name Silver Ghost. Johnson used it in reliability trials, while Royce continued to revise engines, transmissions, brakes and chassis details through the production run.

British manufacture moved from Manchester to Derby in 1908. Springfield production served the American market from 1921 to 1926, with local chassis details and American coachwork. Those differences, plus later rebodies, make chassis-level research essential before valuation.
