## A factory body without closing the coachbuilder's door

John Blatchley's full-width body reached production in 1955 after seven prototypes. It gave more cabin room, a stiffer chassis and an automatic gearbox as standard, while preserving the separate frame expected by traditional clients and coachbuilders.

The Silver Cloud II arrived in 1959 with the 6.2-litre V8 anticipated by the original engine-bay package. The Silver Cloud III followed in 1962 with a lower radiator, a sloping bonnet and paired headlamps.

Published production totals are not uniform. RM Sotheby's has cited 7'248 across the run, while other registries and secondary references produce totals around 7'300 depending on how long-wheelbase and coachbuilt chassis are counted. The body style and chassis record are more useful than a single series total.

That distinction controls value today. A saloon, a Mulliner Adaptation and a Koren-design drophead may share running gear but not scarcity, restoration cost or buyer pool. |
| The V8 was planned in | The Cloud I used a 4.9-litre six, but its engine bay was sized for the 6.2-litre V8 that arrived with the Cloud II in 1959. The Cloud III kept the V8, reduced radiator height and adopted four headlamps. The visual changes are small beside the mechanical break between I and II. |
| Build sheets outrank appearance | Standard saloons have been converted into dropheads, and correct-looking cars can carry later engines, steering conversions or replacement coachwork. Chassis cards, body numbers and engine records should establish what left Crewe and which coachbuilder received it before rarity is priced in. |
