## Piëch replaced the 904 from the frame out

The 906 followed the 904 but retained little of its construction. Under Ferdinand Piëch's supervision, Porsche moved to a tubular frame with a thin, unstressed glass-fibre shell and installed a six-cylinder engine derived from the 911 programme.

Porsche presented the Carrera 6 to the press in January 1966. Customer demand absorbed the homologation run quickly, while works development added fuel injection, long-tail bodywork and experimental eight-cylinder engines.

The car won the Targa Florio outright and helped Porsche take the 1966 two-litre sports-car and prototype categories. The 910 replaced it at works level, but private owners raced individual 906s for years.

Engines, bodies and frames were replaced during period racing. A chassis number alone cannot establish the specification that survives. |
| Targa Florio, first overall | Willy Mairesse and Herbert Müller won the 1966 Targa Florio in Scuderia Filipinetti's 906. A works Carrera 6 finished third. The result came on the 72-kilometre Madonie road circuit, where low mass and a small frontal area mattered more than outright displacement. |
