The body became structure

Porsche bonded a glass-fibre body to a steel box frame and placed the engine behind the seats. The 904/4 gave owners a five-speed, four-cam car they could drive to a race. Porsche built 106 four-cylinder examples.

## A new construction method for the post-356 racer.

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche designed the low body around a mid-engine package and a frontal area of only 1.4 square metres. Heinkel helped manufacture the glass-fibre shells, which Porsche bonded to pressed-steel frames.

The 904 opened its 1964 Le Mans record with four cars at the head of the two-litre class. At the Targa Florio, Antonio Pucci and Colin Davis won overall in a four-cylinder 904, while Porsche also used six- and eight-cylinder works versions to develop the next generation of prototypes.
