# CLK GTR Straßenversion

A GT1 car, registered

The CLK badge disguises a carbon GT1 chassis with a V12 behind the driver. AMG and HWA built them for homologation, adding only ABS, air conditioning, trim and a stereo. Public sales are rare; chassis history matters.

## The price and the proof

Indicative road-car band $7.5M–$11M · 1 documented road sales · 1 recorded sales on file. Modeled values are not observed sales. Nothing here is investment advice.

Confidence: estimate. The band is an editorial estimate anchored by the documented 2018 coupé sale, the unsuccessful $8'000'000 to $9'000'000 2023 coupé offering and the $10'235'000 2023 roadster sale. The two body styles do not trade as one market, and public transactions are too sparse for higher confidence.

Indicative USD range for documented, road-ready coupés. Roadsters and 7.3-litre Supersport conversions require separate appraisal.

The public evidence shows a sharp rise from the 2018 coupé result, but it does not establish a continuous index. The 2023 roadster is both scarcer and a later derivative.

## Homologation completed after the racing had begun

The FIA announced its GT championship in December 1996. Mercedes-Benz and AMG answered with a new car in 128 days, using a purchased McLaren F1 GTR as an early powertrain and packaging mule. Bernd Schneider put the finished CLK GTR on pole at its Hockenheim debut in April 1997.

Six wins delivered both 1997 titles. The first customer road coupés followed in summer 1998, with the race-car carbon structure, a larger 6.9-litre V12 and a cabin made just civil enough to register. Twenty coupé customer cars were completed across 1998 and 1999.

The count is not clean. Mercedes-Benz period material describes 25 road cars, the number associated with the regulations. Later RM Sotheby's catalogues identify 20 coupés and six roadsters, one produced with the coupé run and five completed later from spare chassis. Collectors should identify the chassis and body style rather than rely on the round homologation number.

| Highlight | Detail |
| --- | --- |
| The CLK parts stop at the lamps | Headlamps, tail lamps and grille establish the family resemblance. The carbon tub, body, mid-mounted engine and sequential transaxle belong to a purpose-built GT1 car. AMG developed the competition car first and dealt with the road requirement in parallel. Unlike the McLaren F1, this was not a road car converted for racing. The customer version retained the race-car architecture and found room for leather, luggage pockets and an audio system around it. |
| Built after the title | The CLK GTR won the 1997 FIA GT drivers' and constructors' championships before the 20 customer coupés entered production in summer 1998. Mercedes-AMG had taken the new race car from decision to debut in 128 days. Gerhard Ungar's team won six of 11 rounds in 1997; by the time road-car production began, the V12 racer was already giving way to the CLK LM. |
| More displacement for the road | The race engine displaced 6.0 litres. The Straßenversion's M297 grew to 6.9 litres and a period-rated 612 PS, without turbochargers. The road engine is not simply a detuned race unit. Extra capacity lifted output while emissions equipment, steel brakes and cabin equipment made registration possible. The six-speed sequential gearbox remained, as did the effort required at low speeds. |

| Engine | 6'898 cc V12 |

> Hans-Werner Aufrecht · 1997 prototype test

### One hundred and twenty-eight days

December 1996 to April 1997

AMG technical director Gerhard Ungar received the brief with the first FIA GT round already fixed for April. A McLaren F1 GTR became a test mule while the team drew, modelled and built its own carbon car.

The first CLK GTR tested in Spain, then qualified on pole at Hockenheim. Its rushed calendar did not become the owner's problem: the customer cars arrived only after a full championship season had exposed the racing hardware.

### The delayed production run

1998 to 1999

HWA and AMG's Special Vehicle Construction Office built 20 customer coupés. Air conditioning, ABS, insulation, leather and luggage storage altered the use case, not the underlying structure.

A small roadster series followed. Its separate intakes, mirrors, roll hoops and wings make it a distinct derivative, and its later completion dates explain why published totals do not agree.

### Milestones

| Date | Title | What happened | Standing |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 April 1997 | Chassis 004 shown to the FIA | AMG presented race chassis 004 in road trim to the FIA, then converted it back to competition specification for Hockenheim. | The programme met its road-car presentation requirement before customer production. |
| 1997 | Both FIA GT titles | Bernd Schneider won the drivers' championship and Mercedes-AMG the constructors' title. | Every road chassis carries a direct link to a championship-winning design. |
| 24 to 25 August 2018 | $4'515'000 coupé sale | Serial 09/25 sold with fewer than 1'500 kilometres and its factory accessories. | A documented public reference for the coupé market. |
| 17 November 2023 | $10'235'000 roadster sale | The third roadster, showing 170 kilometres, sold at more than twice the 2018 coupé result. | Body style and scarcity created a separate price tier. |
