## A road car from a racing team

The project began with a 1988 discussion among McLaren directors waiting for a flight from Milan. Gordon Murray's brief called for low mass, a central driving position, a naturally aspirated engine and no electronic driver aids.

Peter Stevens shaped the compact body around Murray's package. BMW Motorsport, under Paul Rosche, designed the S70/2 V12 after Honda declined the engine programme. McLaren presented the finished car in Monaco on 29 May 1992.

Production expanded beyond the standard road car into GTR, LM and GT derivatives. McLaren records 106 F1-series cars in total; RM Sotheby's identifies 64 as road-specification F1s.

| The centre seat | The pedals, wheel and sightline sit on the longitudinal axis. Two passenger seats are set back on either side, leaving luggage lockers in the flanks. The arrangement removed the compromise between right- and left-hand drive, gave the driver an open view past both front corners and kept three adults inside a body shorter than many contemporary sports cars. |
| A purpose-built BMW V12 | Paul Rosche's BMW Motorsport group supplied a 6'064 cc V12 built for this car, not an adapted series engine. Gold foil shields the carbon structure from its exhaust heat. The engine exceeded Gordon Murray's power target without turbochargers. Its response, six-speed manual gearbox and lack of electronic intervention define the standard road car more than the later top-speed record does. |
| The road car went racing | Customer demand produced the F1 GTR. At Le Mans in 1995, the adapted road-car platform finished first, third, fourth, fifth and thirteenth overall. That result created the LM road cars and later Longtail programme. It also means an F1 dossier must separate standard road cars, GTRs, LMs, GTs and later factory conversions rather than treating all 106 chassis alike. |
