## The Bora package, reduced

Maserati introduced the Merak in 1972 as the lower-displacement companion to the Bora. Giorgetto Giugiaro adapted the body, while the 3.0-litre V6 came from the engine family Maserati had developed for the Citroën SM.

The oil crisis strengthened the case for the smaller car. Under Citroën ownership the Merak shared controls and hydraulic equipment with French products; after Alejandro de Tomaso took control, the SS moved toward more conventional hardware and added power.

A 1'999 cc Merak 2000 followed for the Italian market, where cars above two litres faced heavier taxation. Production ended in 1983. Maserati's current page describes about 1'830 cars, while its three published variant counts total 1'817.

Giugiaro retained the Bora's nose and door structure, then used open buttresses over a conventional engine lid. That distinction matters during inspection. The Merak is not simply a smaller-engined Bora: its rear body, cabin packaging and engine installation are specific to the model. |
| Citroën hardware defines the early cars | Early Meraks use Citroën-era instruments, a single-spoke wheel and high-pressure hydraulic functions. Later De Tomaso-era cars replace much of that equipment with more conventional Maserati hardware. A conversion can make servicing easier but erases the specification that distinguishes an early car. A collector file should show which systems remain and who maintains them. |
| The SS is a separate market | The 1976 Merak SS raises factory output from 190 to 220 hp and carries a revised cabin and exterior identification. Maserati records 787 examples, against 830 base cars and 200 two-litre cars. Condition and correct specification still outrank the badge. The public ledger below shows how storage history, mechanical readiness and documentation can outweigh nominal rarity. |
