Confidence: estimate. Two documented USD auction sales at $154'000 and $137'500 establish public observations, but both are from 2016 to 2018. The estimate also rests on the catalogue's existing valuation and allows for hydraulic condition, gearbox, market specification and restoration quality.

Indicative range for complete road cars. European bumpers, correct hydraulics, five-speed specification and documented mechanical work can move an example within or beyond it.

Originality and a rare factory colour supported the 2016 result. A later five-speed car sold below its low estimate, showing that rarity alone does not set the price.

## A Ghibli successor under Citroën

Bertone presented the Khamsin form at the 1972 Turin show, and production began in 1974. It was Maserati's first series-production design by Bertone, drawn by Marcello Gandini.

Giulio Alfieri retained the 4.9-litre quad-cam V8 and front-engine layout, but the chassis changed substantially. A unitary body, rear subframe and independent rear suspension replaced the older Ghibli formula.

Citroën high-pressure systems powered the steering, brakes, clutch, headlamp pods and driver's seat. Production continued through ownership changes and ended in 1982. Maserati's current archive gives 430 cars; Gooding's 2018 catalogue used 421, illustrating the surviving count dispute.

| The rear glass carries the lamps | Gandini exposed the luggage area and mounted the tail lamps in the transparent rear panel. The glass makes the Khamsin's tail visually disappear while leaving the boot and spare wheel visible from outside. Original glazing, lamp mounts and rear-panel fit are specific, expensive details. Repairs that cloud or stress the panel change the defining surface of the car. |
| Hydraulics run more than brakes | One high-pressure Citroën-derived system assists the steering, brakes and clutch, raises the headlamp pods and adjusts the driver's seat. When correct, the controls are immediate; when neglected, faults spread across the cabin and chassis. A pre-purchase file should name the hydraulic specialist, fluid used, accumulator condition and recent pressure-system work. Conventional conversions reduce both risk and originality. |
| Alfieri's last Maserati programme | Maserati identifies the Khamsin as Giulio Alfieri's final work while he led its engineering department. It kept the front-engine V8 formula but added independent rear suspension and a unitary body. The car closes the Citroën chapter. Later management moved toward different engines, components and production priorities; Maserati did not return to a front-engine V8 GT until the 3200 GT era. |
