# A6GCS/53

Two litres, built to race

The A6GCS/53 is a competition car: two litres and a documented record in the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio. Chassis identity, period bodywork and continuity of its engine, gearbox and race history decide value.

1953 to 1955 · 52 built · Modena

## The price and the proof

Indicative road-car band $2.5M–$6M · 9 documented road sales · 9 recorded sales on file. Modeled values are not observed sales. Nothing here is investment advice.

Confidence: medium. Two documented public results establish the broad range, but they are materially different cars: the 2018 Frua-bodied chassis brought $5.17M, while a Fantuzzi-bodied car with a correct-type replacement engine brought $2.59M in 2023. Originality, body history and period competition provenance dominate the spread.

Indicative USD range for documented A6GCS/53 cars. The four Pinin Farina Berlinettas and exceptional works histories require separate treatment.

The public record shows no single price for the type. A one-off body and strong continuity can trade at roughly twice the level of a car whose file records major component changes.

## A sports-racer developed for the 1953 season

Maserati hired Gioacchino Colombo in 1952 to turn the A6GCS into a more consistent two-litre sports racer. The revised short-stroke six, twin-cam head, twin ignition and widened monoposto-derived frame became the A6GCS/53.

RM Sotheby's records 52 examples: 48 open cars and four Pinin Farina Berlinettas. Published totals are not fully uniform, and surviving chassis may carry later bodies or correct-type replacement drivetrains; the number alone is less useful than a chassis-level file.

The type took a class win in the 1953 Mille Miglia, second and third overall at the 1953 Targa Florio and further wins in Italian road and circuit events. Private owners continued racing the cars after their works careers, which explains both their eligibility and the complexity of their present identities.

| Highlight | Detail |
| --- | --- |
| Designed around the two-litre class | Gioacchino Colombo shortened the six-cylinder engine's stroke, added twin camshafts and twin-plug ignition, then widened a monoposto-derived chassis for two seats. The result put 170 hp into a car weighing roughly 740 kg. |
| Four roofs | Rome dealer Guglielmo Dei commissioned Pinin Farina to clothe A6GCS/53 chassis after Maserati could not place the work directly. Four closed Berlinettas were completed; the open competition form remained the centre of the model. |
| Identity is the file | These cars raced, crashed, changed engines and were rebodied. A collector should reconcile chassis stamps, engine type, gearbox, body chronology and every period entry before treating two A6GCS/53s as comparable. |
