# 5000 GT

The race V8 went formal

The 5000 GT put the 450S racing V8 into a reinforced chassis and sent 34 cars to eight coachbuilders. Body styles carry different market weight; chassis identity, coachbuilder and archive continuity come first.

1959 to 1965 · 34 built · Modena

## The price and the proof

Indicative road-car band $850K–$1.5M · typical $1.1M · 7 documented road sales · 7 recorded sales on file. Modeled values are not observed sales. Nothing here is investment advice.

Confidence: medium. Three documented USD auction sales from 2017 to 2022 support the lower and middle part of the band. The sample is thin and mixes Touring, Allemano and one-off Michelotti coachwork; restoration state and body significance can move a car far beyond a model-wide range.

Indicative USD range for documented cars. One-off coachwork and the three early Shah-specification cars require individual assessment.

The three public results cluster between $885'000 and $1'017'500. That narrow result range conceals large differences in coachwork, condition and provenance.

## A private request became a 34-car programme

The 5000 GT began with the Shah of Persia's request for a faster 3500 GT. Alfieri did not make a simple engine swap: the AM103 chassis, braking and driveline were revised around the nearly five-litre four-cam V8.

Touring completed the first body and Maserati showed the car at Turin in 1959. Three cars used that Shah specification. For the series that followed, Maserati softened the racing engine with revised dimensions, chain-driven camshafts and Lucas mechanical injection.

The client list included Gianni Agnelli, Briggs Cunningham, the Aga Khan, Ferdinando Innocenti and Stewart Granger. Production stopped at 34, with 22 Allemano coupés and a small group of bodies that need to be valued individually.

| Highlight | Detail |
| --- | --- |
| The Shah asked for the engine | Mohammad Reza Pahlavi tested a 3500 GT in 1958 and wanted more performance. Giulio Alfieri answered with project AM103: a reinforced chassis around the 450S sports-racing V8. |
| Eight bodies, one type number | The 34 cars were distributed across Touring, Allemano, Pinin Farina, Monterosa, Ghia, Bertone, Vignale and Frua. Allemano built 22; the one-off bodies form their own comparison sets. |
| The first three stand apart | Touring clothed the Shah specification first. Those three early cars retained the shorter-stroke, 450S-like engine; later cars used a longer stroke, chain-driven cams and Lucas mechanical injection for road manners. |
| The dates do not agree | Maserati's current classic page lists production through 1966, its 60th-anniversary technical sheet stops at 1964, and the catalogue assignment uses 1959 to 1965. The 34-car total is consistent; the displayed range follows the assignment. |
