# 250F

The front-engined title car

The 250F is valued chassis by chassis: works cars and Cameron Millar continuations occupy separate markets. Fangio's four-win 1957 season is central; mechanical identity and a period race file decide each car.

1954 to 1960 · ~26 built · Modena

## The price and the proof

Indicative road-car band $4M–$8M · 7 documented road sales · 7 recorded sales on file. Modeled values are not observed sales. Nothing here is investment advice.

Confidence: low. The ledger has one directly documented original-car result: chassis 2525 at $4.62M in 2014. Public transactions are too rare, and chassis histories too individual, to infer a tight current band; the range allows for accepted period identity, racing provenance and restoration quality but is not a computed market average.

Original period cars only. Cameron Millar constructions and other recreations form a separate market even when they contain original Maserati components.

Chassis 2525 set a $4.62M model auction record in 2014. No comparable recent public sale was found that would establish today's level for another period 250F.

The 2014 Gooding result includes buyer's premium as published. The broader band is an editorial range anchored to that sale, not a statistically derived valuation.

## Maserati's customer Grand Prix car became its 1957 title winner

The 250F was ready by the end of 1953 for Formula 1's new 2.5-litre rules. Juan Manuel Fangio won its first race in Argentina in January 1954 and won again in Belgium before moving to Mercedes; points from both teams counted toward his 1954 title.

Maserati kept developing the car: five-speed gearboxes, revised brakes, lighter frames, offset drivetrains and an experimental V12 all appeared. Stirling Moss won Monaco and Italy in 1956. Fangio returned for 1957 and won Argentina, Monaco, France and Germany on the way to his fifth championship.

Period production is commonly given as about 26 cars, but chassis numbers were reused, frames were replaced and later Cameron Millar cars incorporated original parts and factory jigs. For valuation, the accepted identity and unbroken history of the particular chassis matter more than the headline count.

| Highlight | Detail |
| --- | --- |
| Built for works drivers and privateers | Maserati sold 250Fs to customers while continuing factory development and support. That kept the car on grids for years, but it also produced exchanged engines, revised frames and chassis-number histories that require specialist reconciliation. |
| The offset car lowered the driver | For 1956 the driveline was angled away from the cockpit, allowing a lower seating position and a smaller frontal area. Chassis 2525, the best-known offset car, won its only World Championship Grand Prix with Stirling Moss at Monza. |
| Nine record laps | At the 1957 German Grand Prix, Fangio lost 48 seconds during his planned stop, then recovered with a sequence that included nine lap records. The win delivered the decisive image of the 250F and formed part of his fifth drivers' title. |
