# Rally 037 Stradale

The last rear-drive champion

The Lancia Rally, internally SE037: a supercharged, mid-engined rear-drive Group B car built from Beta Montecarlo structure and Pininfarina bodywork. In 1983 it beat Audi's four-wheel-drive campaign by two points.

1982–1984 · 200 required · Group B

## The price and the proof

Indicative road-car band €450K–€750K · typical €600K · 8 documented road sales · 8 recorded sales on file. Modeled values are not observed sales. Nothing here is investment advice.

Confidence: low. The road-car band is an editorial, non-normalised reading of the documented €451'000 and €770'000 RM sales. The 2024 $588'000 result and 2025 $450'000–550'000 estimate are recency checks in another currency, not conversions.

Road-car presentation band in EUR, low confidence. Evolution 1's €1.0m–1.3m page reference is anchored to one 2022 GBP sale; Evolution 2's €0.9m–1.2m reference rests on an unsold GBP estimate and a USD asking price, so neither is a sale series.

The public record moves from six-figure road cars to a seven-figure works file without creating one blended market. Chassis 319's result prices provenance, development history and originality; Stradales remain the road-car reference.

## The 037's cleanest identity is not its production total but its 1983 result: a rear-wheel-drive car defeating Audi's four-wheel-drive campaign under the best-seven-of-ten rule.

Audi answered with an Argentina 1–2–3–4 and Finland 1–2. Lancia's Sanremo 1–2–3 by Alén, Röhrl and Bettega secured the makes' title; the works team then skipped the remaining rounds.

WRC describes tarmac agility and low weight as partial answers to the quattro's traction advantage. Final score: Lancia 118, Audi 116.

| Highlight | Detail |
| --- | --- |
| The rear-drive decision | In April 1980 the selected layout became a longitudinal mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive project rather than the Beta Montecarlo Turbo's transverse arrangement. RM dates approval and Limone's first SE037 sketch to April 1980, Dallara's prototype build to September and first Campo Volo running to before Christmas. The choice would look obsolete beside Audi's four-wheel drive — then win the 1983 manufacturers' title. |
| A blower, not a turbo | RM says supercharging was selected for throttle response and less turbo lag. The specialist register adds time and capability risk, explicitly as a specialist account. The road car made 205 hp in the official account. The works file moved from 255 hp through 300 hp with water injection to a 325 hp 2.1-litre Evolution 1 tune; Evolution 2 sources split between 310 hp and 325 bhp. |
| Two points over Audi | Lancia finished the 1983 manufacturers' championship on 118 points to Audi's 116. The result made the 037 the last rear-wheel-drive car to take that title. The best-seven-of-ten rule discarded Lancia's Argentina score and Audi's Sanremo score. Lancia's Sanremo 1–2–3 clinched the championship; works Lancia then skipped the remaining rounds while Audi won the RAC. |

## One project, four distinct states

The Stradale made SE037 legal. Corsa established the Group B competition base; Evolution 1 carried the mature 1983 title campaign; Evolution 2 enlarged and simplified the works car for 1984.

The road homologation car: a longitudinal supercharged 2.0-litre four, rear-wheel drive and Pininfarina-developed bodywork around the Beta Montecarlo's central monocoque.

Group B required 200 road cars, the same figure used by Lancia's official Heritage account. RM says 207 were complete at homologation and elsewhere uses 217; the specialist project register says 222 hand-built without defining its denominator.

The first works evolution: 255 hp in early race form, 300 hp with water injection and 325 hp after enlargement to 2.1 litres.

RM calls 28 cars Evolution 1. Motorsport Almanac instead gives 21 evolution cars without explaining the difference. Chassis 319 first appeared in Evo 1 specification at Madeira in 1982; the 1983 label describes the mature title campaign, not the specification's debut.

- First Evo 1 start: 1982 Rali Vinho da Madeira, chassis 319

## Numbers that moved

The honest 037 file has no single build total. It keeps every denominator with its scope, then separates a title identity that is unusually clear: the last rear-wheel-drive manufacturers' champion.

| Plate A | Plate B | Year | Story |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 200 | 207 | Threshold versus completed | Group B required 200 road cars, and official Heritage uses that figure. RM says 207 had been completed when homologation was certified on 1 April 1982 and elsewhere describes 207 roadgoing Stradales. Those published accounts do not reconcile the claims. |
| 217 | 222 | Two wider denominators | RM calls chassis 022 the 22nd of 217 and chassis 057 the 57th of 217. The specialist project register says 222 were hand-built without defining the denominator. Neither source explains how its total relates to 207. |
| 53 | 28 / 21 / 20 | Competition counts | Official Heritage says 53 of the 200 were tuned for competition. RM says 28 Evolution 1; Motorsport Almanac says 21 evolution cars and 20 Evo 2; Bonhams also says 20 Evo 2. These may overlap or describe conversions, so they are not added. A secondary overview's 257 total stays discrepancy-only. |
| RWD | AWD era | The champion's identity | WRC identifies the 037 as the last rear-wheel-drive car to win the manufacturers' title. It beat Audi 118 to 116 in 1983 while four-wheel drive was becoming dominant. |
| 412 | Unverified | The cut number | Bonhams describes chassis 412 as a nine-win Evo 2 and 1984 Italian Group B champion. Artcurial says the chassis-number zone was cut and re-welded, so the asserted Martini and Olio Fiat–Tabaton provenance is not verifiable. |

### Rally by name, 037 by code

The project

Lancia's formal model name was Rally. The number came from Abarth's SE037 project code: a Beta Montecarlo central monocoque with tubular structures at both ends, a longitudinal supercharged four and Pininfarina-developed bodywork.

Pininfarina built the body shells in RM's account and completed the form in its wind tunnel. The Stradale appeared at the 1982 Turin motor show at L45'630'000, a period amount left deliberately unconverted.

### Rear drive, on purpose

The decision

The Beta Montecarlo Turbo had won the Group 5 world titles in 1980 and 1981. Limone derived SE037 from that endurance base after the team rejected a clean-sheet Ferrari 308 V8 spaceframe route.

Project approval and Limone's sketch came in April 1980, Dallara's prototype in September, and first Campo Volo running before Christmas. By November 1981 SE037-001 was the first 037 tested on gravel at La Mandria; in January 1982 it appeared there in Martini colours.

### The two-point season

The championship

Monte Carlo opened the case: Röhrl and Geistdörfer first, Alén and Kivimäki second, Audi's quattros third and fourth. Across the eligible manufacturers' rounds, Lancia answered Audi's traction with tarmac pace and a lighter rear-drive package.

Audi's Argentina sweep and Finland one–two kept the score alive. Lancia's Sanremo one–two–three by Alén, Röhrl and Bettega clinched the manufacturers' title. The discarded scores left Lancia on 118 and Audi on 116.

### Numbers that refuse to add

The ledger

Two hundred is the Group B threshold and the official road-car claim. RM uses 207 completed or roadgoing cars, then 217 in two chassis descriptions. The specialist project register says 222 hand-built and leaves the denominator undefined.

Competition numbers are no cleaner: 53 tuned cars in an official account, 28 Evolution 1 in RM, 21 evolution cars and 20 Evo 2 in Motorsport Almanac, and 20 Evo 2 in Bonhams. The file keeps them apart because the sources provide no bridge between them.

## Project, command and cockpit

The 037 file joins the Abarth engineer, the Lancia team principal and the works drivers who carried a rear-drive car through an increasingly four-wheel-drive championship.

### Sergio Limone

Project engineer · Abarth

RM names Limone as the SE037 engineer. He sketched the approved project in April 1980, carried the Dallara-built prototype into testing and worked at Lancia and Abarth from 1972 to 2005.

### Cesare Fiorio

Sporting director · Lancia

The HF founder led the 1983 title campaign. Fair Play Menarini credits that championship within a Lancia career that had reached 18 world titles by 1988.

### [Walter Röhrl](https://hiconium.dev/people/walter-rohrl)

Works driver · 1983

WRC characterises the two-time champion as cerebral and precise. He won three rallies in 1983 and finished second in the drivers' standings with Lancia.

### Markku Alén

Works driver · 037 campaign

WRC identifies Alén with Röhrl as a spearhead of the 037 campaign. Chassis 319's file begins with Alén and Kivimäki at Costa Smeralda.

### Attilio Bettega

Works driver · title-winning team

Bettega was part of Lancia's 1983 title-winning team, including fifth at the Acropolis in chassis 210. He was killed on the 1985 Tour de Corse.
