## A new company around an old engine

Lamborghini presented the Murciélago at Frankfurt in September 2001. Luc Donckerwolke's shape retained the wedge, scissor doors and forward cabin of the earlier V12 cars, but it was the first clean-sheet product developed with Audi resources behind it.

The launch car used a 6.2-litre V12 at 580 CV. The LP 640-4 enlarged it to 6.5 litres and 640 CV, followed by the 650 CV roadster and the 670 CV SuperVeloce.

Production ended in 2010 after 4'099 cars across coupé, roadster and limited editions. The Aventador replaced both the mixed-material chassis and the long-running engine family.

Tighter development and build quality arrived without changing the basic recipe: V12 behind the cabin, gearbox ahead of it, drive to all four wheels. Its structure still mixes steel tubing, carbon fibre and aluminium. The Aventador that followed moved to a carbon monocoque and a new engine, leaving the Murciélago as the bridge between two engineering eras. |
| Manuals became the exception | A six-speed open-gate manual was available, but most later buyers chose the E-Gear automated manual. Surviving gated cars now form a distinct market within the model. Condition remains mechanical as much as cosmetic. Clutch history, hydraulic systems, front-lift operation and evidence of regular servicing matter on cars whose mileage can be low but whose components are now two decades old. |
| The SV closed the line | The LP 670-4 SV removed about 100 kg and raised output to 670 CV. It was the last road Lamborghini to use the V12 architecture whose roots reach back to the company's first production car. Lamborghini planned 350. Auction houses and specialists publish different estimates for completed cars, so the numbered plaque should not be read as a confirmed production count. Wing type, gearbox and original specification divide an already narrow sample. |
