Public results remain sparse. Exceptional colour and named provenance can move a car beyond the core band.

## Built to mark fifty years

Ferrari announced the F50 in 1995 as the car for its fiftieth anniversary, two years early. The brief was unusually literal: take the Formula 1 car the company had been racing and make it road-legal without softening what made it what it was.

The engine came from the 641 that Alain Prost and Nigel Mansell had raced in 1990 — a 3.5-litre V12 enlarged to 4.7 litres and detuned to survive road use. The carbon tub, the pushrod suspension and the structural engine mounting all came from the same place.

It was not immediately loved. The press compared it to the F40 and found it less brutal, and to the McLaren F1 and found it slower. Its reputation recovered slowly, then decisively, as the market understood how few there were and what the drivetrain actually was.

It also means an engine-out service is a chassis operation, which is a large part of why F50 maintenance costs what it does. |
| Deliberately one short | Ferrari calculated it could sell 350 and built 349. Scarcity was engineered before the first car was delivered. In the United States the cars were initially placed on a two-year lease rather than sold outright, with Ferrari retaining a say in where they went. The policy was unpopular with buyers and effective at keeping early cars out of speculative hands — the opposite of what had happened to the F40. |
| No assistance anywhere | No ABS, no traction control, no power steering, no servo behind the brake pedal. The F50 asks for the driver's full attention and returns everything it is told. It sits between two eras. The F40 before it was raw because Ferrari had not yet fitted the electronics; the Enzo after it was fast because Ferrari had. The F50 is the last of the analogue halo cars, and the only one of the three with a naturally aspirated V12 and a manual gate. |
