# 250 GT Berlinetta "Tour de France"

A road racer wins

The long-wheelbase 250 GT Berlinetta earned its unofficial name by winning the Tour de France Automobile four years running. Seventy-seven cars span bodies and mechanical evolutions; chassis history matters more than a model label.

1956 to 1959 · 77 built · Maranello

## The price and the proof

Indicative road-car band $5M–$9M · typical $6.5M · 1 documented road sales · 1 recorded sales on file. Modeled values are not observed sales. Nothing here is investment advice.

Confidence: medium. Public sales are sparse and chassis quality dominates. The 1956 winning car is an exceptional provenance outlier.

| Record | Amount | What | Venue | Date |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Road record | $13'200'000 | 1956 TdF winner · 0557 GT | RM Sotheby's Monterey | 2015 |

## A production-based GT became Ferrari's road-racing tool.

Pinin Farina designed a light berlinetta body over Ferrari's 2'600 mm 250 GT chassis; Scaglietti built most examples in aluminium. De Portago's 1956 French win began four consecutive victories, followed by Olivier Gendebien from 1957 through 1959.

The body changed repeatedly across the run. Restoration accuracy therefore depends on build sheets and chassis-specific period photographs, not a single reference car.

| Highlight | Detail |
| --- | --- |
| The win supplied the name | Alfonso de Portago and Ed Nelson won the 1956 Tour de France Automobile in chassis 0557 GT. Ferrari then used the race name internally for the competition berlinetta. |
| Seventy-seven individual files | Louvre count, headlamp treatment, alloy coachwork, competition record and retained components differ by chassis. A price for one series is not a price for all TdFs. |

| Label | Value |

| Victories | TdF · 1956–1959 |
| Coachbuilder | Scaglietti · most cars |

## What moves the price

Spans are indicative, drawn from documented public sales. Calibrated multipliers for a specific chassis remain member instruments.

| Value driver | Indicative range | Meaning | Documentary evidence |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Documented period racing | +20% to +80% | Major-event starts and results belong to the chassis, not merely the model. | 1956 winning chassis reached $13'200'000 in 2015. |
| Retained original components | +15% to +40% | Chassis, body, engine, gearbox and axle confirmed against factory records. | |
| Identity or body-history gaps | −20% to −50% | Unresolved rebody, replacement drivetrain or race-damage history narrows the buyer pool. | |
