The missing chassis is not assigned a current market value here; Bugatti's statements above €100 million are hypothetical if it reappears and is authenticated. ## From Aérolithe to Atlantic Jean Bugatti's 1935 Aérolithe established the low roof, long bonnet and external centre seam. Between 1936 and 1938 Bugatti translated that experiment into four aluminium-bodied Atlantics on the short, low Type 57S chassis. The name honoured aviator Jean Mermoz, who disappeared over the South Atlantic in 1936. Jean Bugatti retained the black second chassis as a works demonstrator; it vanished before the German occupation and has not been authenticated since. | Highlight | Detail | | --- | --- | | The seam outlived its material | The 1935 Aérolithe prototype used Elektron, a magnesium-rich alloy that could not be welded safely, so its halves were riveted.
