# Type 57 SC Atalante

Seventeen lowered coupés

The Atalante puts Jean Bugatti's two-seat coupé body on the shorter Type 57S chassis. Seventeen received factory coachwork. The SC label means a supercharger is present; when and by whom it was fitted must be proved.

1936 to 1938 · 17 Atalante bodies built · Molsheim

## The price and the proof

Indicative road-car band $6M–$12M · 2 documented road sales · 2 recorded sales on file. Modeled values are not observed sales. Nothing here is investment advice.

Confidence: low. A documented $10.345 million 2022 sale anchors the range, but only 17 Type 57S Atalantes were built and chassis histories differ sharply in engine, supercharger, body and restoration originality.

The band applies to genuine Type 57S Atalante coachwork with established history. Standard-chassis Atalantes and later bodies are separate comparisons.

## The sporting Type 57 in closed form

Bugatti introduced the Type 57S at the Paris Salon in 1936. S stood for surbaissé: the frame was shorter and lower, the rear axle passed through it and the engine used dry-sump lubrication.

Jean Bugatti's Atalante body used a rounded roof, small side glass and a separate luggage tail. Seventeen Type 57S chassis received this coachwork at Molsheim.

The C suffix requires care. Type 57S cars were naturally aspirated when introduced; factory or later Roots superchargers brought individual cars to roughly 200 bhp. A catalogue title alone does not establish when the conversion occurred.

| Highlight | Detail |
| --- | --- |
| The axle passes through | The rear axle runs through the frame rather than beneath it. With a shorter wheelbase and split front axle, the Type 57S sits visibly lower than a standard Type 57. |
| Seventeen is not the SC count | Seventeen Type 57S chassis received Jean Bugatti's Atalante body. Superchargers were fitted at different points in individual histories, so the surviving SC population is not a clean factory production number. |
| One chassis, one file | Original chassis, coachwork, engine and supercharger history decide value. Chassis 57523 retained matching-number major components and sold for $10'345'000 in 2022. |

| Label | Value |
| --- | --- |
| Power | 200 bhp |
| Atalante bodies | 17 |
