## A homologation programme overtaken by its own timetable

BMW Motorsport GmbH began planning the E26 under Jochen Neerpasch with engine specialist Paul Rosche. The aim was a purpose-built competition car rather than another derivative of a production BMW, with a road run large enough for Group 4 homologation.

Lamborghini was engaged for chassis and body development, but its financial problems delayed the programme. BMW brought control back in April 1978 and split manufacture across Marchesi, T.I.R., Italdesign and Baur. Giugiaro's shape developed the low, mid-engined proportions of Paul Bracq's 1972 BMW Turbo study.

The road car arrived with 277 hp, a five-speed manual and no shared platform beneath it. BMW Group Classic records 453 cars from 1978 to 1981. That total is disputed in later BMW and auction publications, so any chassis-level claim still needs register or factory-file support.

T.I.R. moulded the glass-fibre body, Italdesign joined the two and trimmed the cabin, then Baur installed the mechanical assemblies in Stuttgart. BMW had first assigned the chassis and body work to Lamborghini. Financial trouble ended that arrangement, leaving Motorsport GmbH to rebuild the production chain while orders accumulated. The hand-offs are part of the car's identity; restoration records should establish which original components survived them. |
| Procar bought time | Group 4 demanded 400 production cars, but the rules moved before BMW could build them. Jochen Neerpasch answered with the one-make Procar series, run before European Formula 1 races in 1979 and 1980. Neerpasch worked with Bernie Ecclestone and Max Mosley on the format. Formula 1 drivers raced equal M1s against specialists and private entrants; Niki Lauda won the first season and Nelson Piquet the second. Road production continued alongside it. |
| Six throttles, no turbo | The M88 gives each cylinder its own inlet tract and throttle. Four valves per cylinder, mechanical Kugelfischer injection and a dry sump make the road engine a specific Motorsport unit, not a tuned showroom six. BMW published 277 hp at 6'500 rpm and 330 Nm from 3'453 cc. The same architecture later fed the M635CSi and M5 engine family, giving the M1 a direct mechanical line into BMW M's series cars. |
