## The export gamble

BMW began with Ernst Loof's Typ 528 project in 1954. US importer Max Hoffman rejected that prototype and connected BMW with New York designer Albrecht Graf von Goertz; 20 weeks separated Goertz's first sketches from approval of the body in March 1955.

The 507 appeared at the Frankfurt motor show in September 1955. Under the aluminium skin sat a frame shortened from the 502 and a 3.2-litre version of BMW's alloy V8, with 150 PS and a four-speed manual gearbox.

Hoffman's promised volume receded while the cost of individual production rose. BMW stopped in 1959 after 252 cars by the count used in the assignment and most auction catalogues; BMW Group Classic's current model-series archive gives 251.

| The body sets the fit | Each aluminium body was finished by hand. A factory hardtop belongs to its own shell; small body differences make another car's roof an imperfect substitute. That makes panel stamps, body history and the fit of the optional hardtop part of the car's identity. A smooth restoration is not enough if those relationships have been lost. |
| The American order never came | Max Hoffman first promised BMW 2'500 orders, then 1'000, then 300 a year. The hand-built roadster reached America at nearly $10'000 and Hoffman imported only 16 across 1957 and 1958. The revisions and missing volume contributed to BMW's 1959 financial crisis. The 507 did the image work it was meant to do, but not the accounting. |
| Series II made room | After 34 early cars, BMW revised the dashboard, moved the fuel tank and changed the soft-top stowage. The result gave occupants and luggage more space without redrawing the body. Auction catalogues generally call the early cars Series I and the revised 218 cars Series II. The designation is now central to catalogue descriptions and comparison sets. |
| Chassis 70079 was found | Elvis Presley took delivery of 70079 on 20 December 1958. After decades in storage, BMW Group Classic identified and restored it to Feather White, with its 150 hp V8 and Becker Mexico radio. The factory restoration took almost two years and returned the car to public view at Pebble Beach in 2016. The case shows what archive confirmation can recover when a famous ownership claim is tested against a chassis number. |
