The 3.0 CSL turned the elegant E9 into BMW's road certificate for touring-car racing. Aluminium panels, thin-gauge steel and Perspex cut about 200 kg; late cars added the loose-delivered aero kit now called Batmobile.

## A homologation paper trail with number plates

Alpina developed the first road-going lightweight from the E9 coupé. Aluminium panels, reduced-gauge steel, Perspex glazing and deleted comfort equipment removed about 200 kg from the 3.0 CS basis.

BMW Motorsport GmbH was formed in 1972 under Jochen Neerpasch. Its work produced the fuel-injected second stage and the 1973 final version: 3'153 cc, 206 PS and the aero package that supplied the Batmobile name.

The competition CSL won the European Touring Car Championship in 1973 and then five consecutive titles from 1975 through 1979. In 1975, Alexander Calder painted Hervé Poulain's Le Mans CSL, the first BMW Art Car.
