## An unofficial project that reset Bentley

Chief projects engineer Ivan Evernden used the pre-war Embiricos Bentley and Corniche as evidence that lower drag could deliver sustained speed without simply adding power. Chief stylist John Blatchley drew a low fastback around the R-Type chassis, and H.J. Mulliner translated it into lightweight aluminium coachwork.

The prototype, OLG 490, ran in 1951. Customer production began in May 1952 and the first delivery followed in June, despite resistance inside a company that also built Rolls-Royce limousines.

Early cars used the tuned 4.6-litre engine; later cars received 4.9 litres as customer options increased weight. When production ended in 1955, 208 cars had been completed.
