## The coupé that separated Bentley from Rolls-Royce

The programme took almost ten years and used the Turbo R chassis and hydraulic running gear as its mechanical base. John Heffernan and Ken Greenley developed the exterior from an initial sketch by Bentley and Rolls-Royce designer Graham Hull, who completed the interior.

Bentley launched the Continental R at Geneva in 1991. Its 0.37 drag coefficient and two-door body delivered a 152 mph top speed, nine mph beyond the related Turbo R despite comparable weight.

The range expanded into faster and shorter-wheelbase derivatives, the Azure convertible and the rare Continental SC. Bentley records 1'548 Continental R models in total, including 158 Mulliners, 44 Le Mans Series cars and 11 Final Series cars; the last Final Series example was completed in 2003.
